Just watch a press conference by Scott Morrison...the steady drone and the intense lack of content and conviction works for me every time.

I lie in bed suggesting to myself what time I want to wake up. This clears my mind of other thoughts while saying the mantra 6am, 6am, 6am or other time. And amazingly I wake up at the time I have suggested to myself.

I always say when that happens to get up and change the pillowcase, this gets rid of whats worrying you and the fresh laundered smell will relax you , best of luck.

Hope you find some good suggestions. Everybody is different. It depends on age as well, I guess. I tried so many things, methods, but still, it is a constant struggle, especially waking up many times and going back to sleep. Oh, sleeping!

Hot milk, but I wouldn’t eat as if your tummy is too full you may toss and turn as you’re to uncomfortable to sleep

Thanks Steven for this very interesting topic for moi. I have looked over the answers and done most of what has been suggested except for the excessive alcohol. I will try Doreen's white port and also once again the Milk with Brandy or honey. I have been an insomniac since having my children many years ago and also working night shift. My go to now is Prime or Netflix and I do find that I fall asleep while watching these shows and will wake up to them being shut down. I suppose it goes to show how very boring some of them are. lol.

Try some warm milk and try not to eat after a certain time of the night like say maybe 9pm or earlier depending upon what time you go to bed.

One is getting a prescription for melatonin. Others have found certain types of music helps. I have a friend who goes to sleep only after a hard exercise session (even though exercise just before sleep is not recommended, but it works for him). It sounds like you've tried lots of these things, however. I'm basically having to go with it too.

Also, having a warm bath. I like to add a few drops of lavender oil. A drop or two of lavender oil on my pillow is good, too. Sometimes when I can't sleep, I burn a couple of incense sticks & it helps me drift off - I don't know why, but it works for me. Be fire safe, of course. Good luck Steven, insomnia's a b-----!

Two, I would have a serious discussion with your health care provider - too verify that there are not any underlying medical issues (physically and/or pyschologically) that are keeping you from falling to sleep in a timely fashion. Three, I would ask your health care provider for sleep suggestions - too help you fall to sleep in a timely fashion! Four - Good Luck!!!!

My go-to cure for that - apart from telling myself my life story, lol - is to take 2 grams (2000mg) of valerian. You get it in herb stores, or to drink a cup of valerian herb tea. You could, and probably have, establish a routine for sleep, wind down with no computer, phone, Ipad work (to avoid blue light) about 2-3 hours before bed time. Keep bedroom cool and dark. If worried about anything in particular, write it down on a pad and let the paper take it from your mind so you can stop thinking about it till the morning. If you can get tapes/cd's or hear just naturally noises of nature: the ocean waves hitting shore, whale songs, running water, (with care on that one, for obvious reasons, lol), wind, thunderstorms, rain falling on roof, Or play/listen to Brahms, or Beethoven or some gentle Mozart. A really good breathing exercise is to breathe In and out slowly counting 10 for both. No eating 3 hours before bed, with your hot herbal tea with(out) honey about 1/2 hr before bed. You've probably heard all these before but bon chance with it all anyways.

I had my Thyroid removed by the time I turned 21 so things got worse after that. I have learned to roll with it over the years otherwise I could become a cranky old woman these days. I do get annoyed when I finally do go to sleep and somebody revs their car or starts up a mower or other equipment or screams up the street on their motor bike etc. I do opinion polls, then I go to bed and read and around 3am or later I finally drop off for an hour or so and then it begins again. Luckily I live alone now however, I do think it runs in families as my father, 3 sisters, a son and some cousins all are sleep deprived.
