Discussion of the Day
Debit & Credit card Surcharge Fees
EnBird2409-Feb-25
How many times you enter any shop & purchase anything & you choose to pay by card as it is easier than cash. I do via my debit card which is my own money not even via a credit card, anyway as it is safer, gives you a acknowledgment of a receipt of what you have spent & you always have a tally of where your money for that day has gone. What I always like to do is many times check the receipts against your bank statement & you find out that most shops end up charging you a surcharge fee for using a card payment option. I find this isn't fare, as many shops these days also don't except cash. If a shop wants to make business, isn't it up to the shop to where the surcharge? How do you feel on this? A few cents here & their it adds up over time. Bad as the banks. Your receipts many never match up to your bank due to the surcharge & many shops don't tell you either.

I paid for daily items by cash (if a business entity doesn't accept cash - the business entity will lose a customer - me). I pay for MAJOR items (maintenance fees, telephone, electricity, internet, etc.) by USPS.money orders. Slightly more expensive but I am trying to leave a small digital trail as possible to AVOID DIGITAL SCAMMERS.

              This sounds sensible.

I do not believe in card charges especially if it is a debit card. I have found to avoid charges on a debit card, do NOT tap the card. Instead - insert it or swipe it. Then choose eftpos - Savings (usually option 3).

This happened to me once many years ago. I had gone into a convenience store for a small purchase and asked the guy why it doesn't sound right. He said it's the fee for using the debit card. That was a long time ago when cards were very new. I think that people must've complained so much that retailers now (Ontario, Canada) add those fees into the price of what you're buying. The majority of people now use debit and credit cards and I'll bet that's another reason for the inflation we see on everything we're buying. Credit card transaction fees cost the store a couple dollars and more, debit somewhat less. We know the business isn't eating those hundreds or thousands and millions of dollars a day!

I use cash for almost everything. Only use my credit card when buying petrol. If a shop won't accept cash I will not be a customer. Full stop. I alway pay my card off in full every month.

To tell the truth, I have never noticed any nor any excessive surcharges for my Merrick Bank MasterCard nor for my credit or debit cards from Members 1st FCU VISA and I have had both for years. I do most of my buying (except groceries) online and at Amazon online and I hardly ever see surcharges for any but delivery fees and usually they are free. Aha! I know why you are complaining so loudly- You must have a bank chequing and savings accts not from a credit union where a depositor is also part owner. Try an FCU instead and see what happens to those surcharges. Best of luck to KC and Andy Reid and his Chiefs tomorrow! Sorry Patrick but for me Tom Brady always will be the best! All of your SB wins have come w/ one team but Tom had the record w/ the Patriots and then another win w/ the Tampa Bay Bucs! That makes Tom not you the best QB in NFL history!

I only have a debit card and I think you shouldn’t pay a fee because it’s my own money. I try to use cash most of the time.

I rather use cash. What happens when the computers are down? you need the cash then. Imagine halfway through getting your groceries at the checkout

I got caught out buying a lotto ticket and paid with me credit card which I keep in plus. I always check my receipts against the statement and found a 1.95 fee for cash advance. First time I thought it was an add on from the previous month and let it go but when it was again on the next statement I checked it. They consider you are paying cash for the lotto which I don't understand. Now I pay with cash. I am actually going back more and more to cash as are a lot of people I know. Perhaps this will force to banks to have cash in their banks again and shops to take cash. There is always a surcharge fee now when one uses a card. Banks making billions from all the fees they charge on everything. Even our mortgages which we pay high interest on still have a monthly account keeping fee.

If the banks are getting back all the cash this way, it's probably just part of the eliminating cash program.

Get yourself under control to use credit card n pay off at each due date. Ensure to use card where there is no surcharge. Pleased to know most of the Asian grocery in Canberra has no surcharge for cards. 🙏
