Discussion of the Day
Should the government take actions on phone scams?
Neil N13-Oct-23
People around me have been receiving phone scams for the past four years. They sometimes have your correct personal information and trick you about your credit card, home internet, and undeliverable packages. Some of us even receive more than 5 phone scams within a day, which is getting out of control. We sometimes expect important phone calls such as doctor's appointments, real deliveries, and job-related inquiries. Do you think the government should deal with these scams? So far, we have not seen any actions from the government. Police should really investigate since this has disturbed some people at a certain level; some even fall into the traps and lose money.

Definite phone scammers should be investigated and prosecuted. Law enforcement should be involved.

It would be goo d if they were able to instruct all the firms part of their use to beam into New Zealand is they needed to come up something to block all scam s with a very strong way of beating the scammers before they get in to home computers and play havoc. Some people get money stollen and other people can loose their identity...i pqy for extra support to help me.

What about someone start up a company, funded by the government to bring these people scamming to justice. It's gotten to the stage now that one has to work out which is the real deal. Difficult to do. I don't accept people on our group, business or personal page anymore until l check them out. Just can't trust anyone these days.

Why not ? Back to early days when phone scam started, I usually received calls telling me something wrong with my computer and they can help to fix it. I said you better send me a computer first, than I can check it out if something was wrong. They just hanged up.

There should be strict enforcement of oversight on telecommunications by the government, specifically law enforcement agencies. Scammers have a field day preying on the unwary, especially seniors who live alone.

The government must make strricts rules and punishments for those cheaters. Longer jail terms would be a start.

I only use a cell phone and it shows 'scam likely' with some calls, so I don't even answer it. I think the companies can do better with their technology if they are showing me a 'scam likely' message. However, the police and fraud department do need to crack down better on these scams. Many seniors have gotten taken advantage of. I don't think government makes this a priority.

I live in Australia and I used to get so many phone calls in one day every day for a couple of years or more. Tax, Solar, Bank, you name it. I also used to get at least 50 scam emails every day also. I changed my landline and my email and thankfully not longer receive any. Our government do try to eliminate them as well as the Telco companies but these scammer change their phone constantly and are too hard to trace. Just hang up on them. Eventually they get tired of not getting through.

These should be screened out by better phone companies..who the government can fine if they fail...the Government would be useless as in most areas...
