Discussion of the Day
To watch or not to watch
David H04-Sep-22
On December 23rd 2019 I turned my television off, and it hasn't been turned on since. I haven't watched TV for over 2 and a half years. People are genuinely surprised by that and often ask why. I lob the question "why should I?" right back, and they are stumped. Here's your chance to help them out. What benefits does watching TV provide?

I stop watching the news for 5 years now as it is really depressing. The only thing I watch on TV now in MLB. I could watch baseball all day long and not get tired of it. For the most part, TV SUCKS

I am a retired senior citizen. I have not watched TV in DECADES. In my humble opinion - TV does not provide any benefits (for me) - not any I need to cultivate

There's so much info if you watch the quality programming.

I watch it if there is something that would interest me. You can always turn off the rubbish. I find some of it illuminating, some entertaining and some educational. If there is nothing on I then go to my computer or my bed and pick up a good book. I think with so many around the world that have been locked down the TV would have been a huge source of entertainment. If you are OK not watching it then that is your perogative but many people do enjoy their interaction with the television set. I was about 8 years old when I first saw TV. It was black and white and the screen was so small and mostly it was live entertainment and it shut down early in the evening.

I watch to learn. I cant stand gameshows or sitcoms. History. A&E, Story TV, all educational stuff. And I like the Positiv Channel (yes, no "e" on the end). It's all inspiring Christian and rated G movies like Diane Fossey in Gorillas in the mist. Sigourney Weaver played Diane Fossey. Quality viewership. Well "Gorillas in the mist" isn't a Christian movie but is the sort of excellent programming they have on the Positive Channel.

Many elderly people I know find that television is their only form of companionship.
